Dr. James CannonDental Sleep Medicine Expert

I have been practicing general dentistry for over 20 years in the Sarasota area. I received my B.S. in biology/animal sciences from The University of Florida as well as my dental degree from The University of Florida College of Dentistry. My post-graduate training is from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and I am also a member of The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

In 2016, I began extensive education and training in Dental Sleep Medicine to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I was diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea and began wearing a mandibular advancement device. I felt immediate relief. My blood pressure eventually returned to normal and my anxiety and stress were reduced. My TMJ symptoms rapidly decreased and I began to have more energy for exercise. Overall I felt more productive at work and experienced a drastic improvement in my quality of life.

Seeing the positive results in my own life helped me believe in Oral Appliance Therapy as an effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance. However, it was when I learned that my father, who had a fatal heart attack in his sleep at the age of 38, also had sleep apnea, I developed an even deeper passion to help my patients sleep better and live better.

I have 2 daughters, 17 and 13 and we are active in our church and volunteering. I enjoy playing golf, exercising, fishing and hiking.
